About
I’m a husband, father, programmer, and writer based in Waco, TX. I build software for FBS also serve as part time Director of Technology for Mockingbird . Here’s a brief guide to this outpost in the Republic of Newsletters.
Theology
It undergirds everything: “everyone is a theologian”, as some say. When I look over the course of my life, the good news of God’s grace for sinful and suffering mortals has convicted and comforted me more times than I can count. It also happens to be something I think about a lot. We are all “miserable offenders”, because to be “miserable” means to be “one in need of mercy” — in other words, human.
Technology
I’ve worked as a software developer for over a decade. This is my vocation — how I’m called to be helpful to others, and provide for my family. Technology doesn’t just encompass software, obviously, but broadly, it’s something I know a thing or two about. It’s also an area that I think many Christians are unprepared to think about, and often susceptible to fear and misunderstanding, especially in more intellectual spaces. I sometimes write technology itself, the business of technology, and technology as a spiritual/social/economic force.
Tomfoolery
I have hobbies beyond these things: reading fantasy, strength and conditioning, listening to music, playing guitar, running an old-school D&D campaign, watching skate/surf videos, pretending that I’ll skate/surf again. These things, along with my wife and children, keep me from taking myself too seriously. I also think that self-seriousness might be the vice of our age. A priest once said to my wife at the church where she worked, “we take the gospel seriously, and nothing else”. I think that’s a good idea.
